Sir Baniyas Island
We were in dire need of escape from Abu Dhabi last weekend, and were very very lucky enough to get to go to Sir Baniyas Island. (Thanks Meg!!) The Island is 9km off the Jebel Dhanna headland, 170 km west of Abu Dhabi, the island and is densely populated with heaps of animals including giraffes, llamas, oryx and ostriches.
The island is noted as far back as the 1500's and even has the ruins of a pre-Islamic church. The animals were introduced as well as heaps of tree regeneration by the late President, His Highness Shaikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, whose palace on the island is still in great condition.
It will open as a resort soon, which we wouldn't be able to afford without selling a kidney, so it was a great day.
