The 2008 Dubai Showjumping Championships were held at Meydan City on the 10, 11 and 12 January, we went on the 11th. Countries represented were Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria and the UAE.
Saudi Arabia had two Royal Highnesses riding for them, and they had special bright blue jumping jackets.
One of the jumps was themed fruit and vegies and we were laughing that the produce was real, not plastic, then when the riders were walking the course a few of them grabbed a mandarine and banana and just started eating it as they paced the course.
There is a photo of a big white arab cross and rider, Abdullah Aziz Al Marzouqi from the UAE, that's who I wanted to win - it was a beautiful horse and he was doing well for a while but slipped down the list.
The cranes in the background behind the tents show how busy construction is there.
Meydan City is a precinct on the outskirts of Dubai that will be a full city built with the racecourse and equestrian centres as the epicentre of the development. The Meydan Racecourse will span 76 million square feet with a dirt and turf track, and a grandstand that sits 60,000 people.
The Racecourse will include a five star hotel, more than ten restaurants, private hospitality suites and boxes, the Dubai Racing Club, a state of the art racing museum, as well as covered car parking for approximately 10,000 cars.
A four kilometre canal which will run from Dubai Creek giving racegoers a unique opportunity to arrive by boat to the racecourse, and will feature a marina and a boathouse. Hospitality and dining facilities within the new grandstand will redefine the racing experience and offer luxury, comfort and hospitality second to none.
