The last few days have seen more rain fall than in the last twelve years. Only several millimetres is enough to send everything into chaos!
As there is so little rain, nothing is built for it - there are hardly any gutters or storm water drains - any drains are clogged up with sand, so the water just collects and stays.
Driving in the rain poses a problem too - as local drivers don't really know how to adapt driving for it - the roads get very slippery due to the sand covering, and drivers either seem to go crazier and faster or drive at 10km's hour with hazard lights on and swerving to avoid any type of puddle in case they melt. Lots of offs and rollovers to be seen.
Dubai has basically closed down due to the water and Chel's work site has stopped for a few days.
The building standards over here are under duress as well - leaks and buckets in just about every building and the sand bagging on the exterior of home slowly dripping off the walls!
One great thing is all the Mosques get a clean and seem so much more vibrant and colourful as their rooves' colours all come out to shine.

there's a house in Ward Street, built in Mediterranean/Arabic style-most picturesque but every time I walk by I think of the water stains on the ceilings of those gorgeous flat roofed Omani houses and wonder how it copes with a 10inch Tewantin downpour!
